Best Way to Paint Your Home Ceiling
Painting your ceiling may seem like a challenge, but it can be simple if you plan properly. Dr Dulux has laid out these few simple steps to painting your ceiling, delivering a smooth and professional finish with your ceiling colour paint.
1. Choose Your Paint and Gather Tools
Pick the right ceiling colour paint for your room. White is classic, brightens the space, and makes it feel larger. Options like Dulux Ultra White reflect light, while Dulux Magic White Matt fades from pink to white, helping you avoid missed spots.
Want something different? Try bold colours! Shades of yellow, green, or blue can add character, create contrast with your walls, and harmonise your home’s colour scheme.
Tools you’ll need:
● Step ladder
● Broom and damp cloth
● Paint roller and tray
● Extension pole
● Sandpaper
● Low tack masking tape
● Emulsion and cutting-in brushes
2. Prepare the Room
Clear the room or push furniture to the center and cover with sheets. Remove light fixtures if possible. Have all your tools ready, and get ready to start.
3. Clean the Ceiling
First, go ahead and get rid of any cobwebs, or dust. Use a damp rag or cloth and wipe the ceiling down to ensure nothing interferes with the paint.
4. Fill Cracks and Sand
With an appropriate filler, fill holes, cracks, etc. Sand the surface smooth after dry to and provide good base for final coat to wall ceiling.
5. Mask Fixtures
Use low tack masking tape around lights, cornices, and other items that may be splashed with paint.
6. Paint Edges First
The first step is cutting in the edges by painting around the fixtures and the perimeter where the wall meets the ceiling to achieve crisp lines.
7. Roll the Larger Areas
Attach the roller to the extension pole, smooth on paint and spread it evenly over your roller. Work in sections that are roughly 1 metre long, working your way out towards the windows or along the corner. Use a “W” motion to spread the thickness of paint and finish the section off with a smooth motion from one end to the other.
8. You’re done!
Once the first coat has dried, you may apply a second coat if needed. When dry, you can start removing your tape, put the furniture back in its place, and take a step back to admire your hard work of painting the ceilings and walls!
