Discover How Colour Trends Are Created

Have you ever wondered how colour trends come to life? Every year, we select the Colour of the Year, a shade that reflects the mood and key trends we anticipate for the upcoming year.

The process of choosing this colour is far from random. At ICI Dulux, a specialized team of colour trends forecasters takes weeks to make the decision. The journey begins in September when our design experts, passionate about colour, invite independent specialists from fields like interior design, fashion, product, industrial, and architectural design to discuss emerging colour trends for the next 18 months.

After the forecasters have pinpointed their key colours and colour trends, around twenty senior colour experts from ICI Dulux worldwide come together for three days to refine the broad trend ideas into a singular, dominant trend. This results in five distinct trend stories, colour palettes, and the ultimate Colour of the Year.

A concept frequently discussed in these workshops is the ‘Zeitgeist effect.’ Essentially, it describes the phenomenon where everyone seems to be drawn to the same themes, materials, or colours. By tapping into this effect, our experts are able to capture the collective mood of the moment, which is crucial for accurate forecasting of colour trends.

Following the workshops, our forecasters create mood boards that help visualize each colour trend's essence. The process then continues with photoshoots of each trend. “We collaborate with different photographers and stylists each year,” says Louise Smith, one of our senior global colour designers. “This ensures our photos remain fresh and that the colour trends are portrayed in the most diverse ways possible.”
